Other Details: The base of this piece is comprised of 6 layers of fabric, cut away (or cut and folded back) to different depths to create the dragonfly shape. The lacing of the wings is painted embroidery thread. The facets of the eyes were created with hexagonal glitter, sealed in under epoxy resin. The legs are made from pipe-cleaners. Color-changing ceramic tiles of flowers and leaves were added to the piece, along with numerous pairs of sheer fabric wings that are folded and sewn so that they stick out from the surface of the work. (I’ve included detail images of these things: one showing a pair of sheer wings jutting up perpendicular to the fabric base and one showing 2 photos of one of the ceramic flowers, identical except one photograph used the flash and the other didn’t – this shows an extreme version of a much more subtle color-shifting effect that the pieces posses).  The title and my signature are both engraved on metal rectangles, the title being placed at the center top of the work, and my signature the center bottom.

Each fabric is exquisite, and different from all the rest. Two layers of gorgeous see-through floral lace were placed over one another, wrong-side-up for a more textured look. The green is simple felt, almost childlike – a fabric that brings to mind kindergarten crafts much more than elegant art. The blue is staple cotton. The rosy mauve of the wings is crushed velvet, as slippery and lightly furry as a muted whisper – 2 layers placed face-to-face to enable the fold-backs that add dimensionality to the diamonds on the dragonfly’s tail.

A NOTE ON THE PRICE: the shipping calculator built into this site vastly underestimates the cost of shipping this item. With it’s extra-large dimensions and heavy weight it costs over $100 just to buy the box from UPS that will fit the work, then over $400 MORE for shipping. Depending on your zipcode, even within the continental 48 states, prices for packing& shipping this item can exceed $660. I thus built the cost of shipping not covered by the site’s shipping calculator into the main price of the item.
